The Underground Needs You!

The Underground is an all volunteer organization that would appreciate your help. We need volunteers to assist with a wide range of activities. You can choose to help occasionally or regularly, as your schedule permits. No experience is necessary. This is a great opportunity to learn, make new friends, and share with others who have similar interests, while promoting our organization. Many of the committee tasks and responsibilities can be shared, so feel free to enlist friends and colleagues to work on your committee if you need additional assistance.

These are a few committees that could use your help:

Programming Committee

If you would like to influence the direction of our educational programs then this committee is for you. This committee is responsible for suggesting educational programs and speakers, securing locations and coordinating the logistics. Do you want to see our educational programs in your area? Then become one of our program coordinators and help us bring these great programs to you. A major improvement to our group is our online registration system. This system has allowed us to streamline our registration process and promote our programs to a larger audience.

Publicity Committee

If you would like to help us get the word out about The Underground and the great things we are doing, then this committee is for you. This committee is responsible for writing and sending press releases, submitting calendar listings and posting announcements to various publications and organizations. You will work closely with our Programming Committee and with our Program Photojournalist to collect content for press releases and announcements.

Membership Committee

If you enjoy meeting new people and want to help us grow then this committee is for you. This committee is responsible for helping us recruit new members and for reviewing membership benefits and suggesting new ones. It is also responsible for working to increase our mailing list contacts in the green industry. This year the major benefit that is being offered to our members are professional listings on our 'Find A Landscape Professional' website. We are also in need of Filemaker database developers to help with the customization of our membership management system.

Exhibits Committee

If you would like to help us increase our visibility by participating in conferences, expos and trade shows, then this committee is for you. This committee is responsible for suggesting venues, submitting applications, arranging for exhibit signage, coordinating logistics, setting up the booth, and recruiting volunteer staff. The Underground currently participates in the New England Grows Conference and Exposition and the New England Spring Flower Show.

Annual Meeting Committee

If you have always wanted to throw a big party then this is the committee for you. This committee is responsible for organizing our Annual Meeting held every October. All the proceeds for these meetings will go directly to The Underground's education efforts. These events will be great fun and the committee is responsible for selling tickets and planning all the fun stuff; the menu, the invites, the program, etc.

Internet Technology Committee

If you are technologically inclined and enjoy the challenges of the internet then this is the committee for you. This committee is responsible for updating, maintaining, and moderating our Wiki Websites, Yahoo Group, Online Forums and Blog. Committee members implement new features, solicit and upload new content, and promote active participation in The Underground. You will also be responsible for recommending new innovative ideas to enhance our technological capabilities and helping with member technical questions and problems.

Audio/Video Production Committee

If you are technologically inclined and enjoy the challenges of using audio and video equipment then this is the committee for you. This committee is responsible for recording, editing, and producing digital audios and videos of our educational programs. Committee members will recommend cutting edge equipment and methods for delivering digital content across the internet. You will be involved in helping us to organize and set up distance learning capabilities.

Sponsorship Committee

If you possess the powers of persuasion then this committee is for you. This committee is responsible for procuring corporate sponsorships and arranging organizational affiliations to benefit our members. Revenues will be used for funding educational programs. Event sponsors are offered company exposure, recognition, messaging and literature distribution opportunities, and complimentary event registration.

Other volunteer positions available include:

K.O.T.B. - Keeper of the Box

If you are well organized and able to obtain, transport, and set up materials at our monthly programs (6-7 per year), then this position is for you. You will be responsible for purchasing beverages and other essential goods for each of our monthly programs that you attend for free. All pre-approved expenses will be reimbursed. In the event that you are unable to attend a program, you must find a substitute volunteer who can perform these duties.

Program Photojournalist/Blog Contributor(s) (Some Previous Experience Preferred But Not Required)

If you are the creative type and enjoy writing and/or photography, then this position is for you. You will be responsible for documenting each of our educational programs and workshops - writing overviews, interviewing speakers and participants, and taking digital photos. You will then post articles and photos to our blog and/or submit them to various publications. You will work with the Publicity Committee to provide content for press releases and announcements. This position includes free admission to all monthly programs. In the event that you are unable to attend a program, you are encouraged to find a substitute volunteer who can perform these duties.
